There is certainly no shortage of hotels and B&Bs in Montreal, but the Marriott Château Champlain (above) stood out during my last visit to the city. Nestled between historic statues and the greenery of Dorchester and Dominion Squares, this contemporary hotel offers first-rate hospitality and a convenient location at a reasonable price. It’s also fun that the locals have affectionately dubbed this hotel as “the cheese-grater” for its 1960’s-era architecture.
The Room:
It felt like staying in a studio apartment with my room’s plush bed, long hallways, and modern decor. The floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with sun, and at night, offers a dazzling view of twinkling city lights. Each room is equipped with wifi, mini bar, hairdryers, and coffee makers. After four hours on a train, I was ready to settle in and call this my temporary home.
Dining:
Guests have choices for onsite eats, including a Starbucks, late night bar, and fine dining restaurant. And room service, of course. For breakfast, there’s an a la carte menu or a hearty buffet at the Restaurant Samuel de Champlain.
On my first morning, I indulged in Eggs Benedict –a toasted English muffin topped with a poached egg, smoked salmon, roasted asparagus, and hollandaise sauce (above). As if that’s not filling enough, I savoured the sides of salty Canadian bacon, crispy capers, and yam hash browns. It was worth getting out of bed for this breakfast.
Amenities:
Need a body break? The hotel has a fitness centre, spa, and an indoor pool in a sun-filled room.
The Location:
The Marriot is ideally located for touring Montreal. The hotel is steps to the métro (subway), and only a fifteen minute walk to Old Montreal, shopping, and attractions. Another big bonus – I walked from the VIA Rail station to the hotel in less than ten minutes, saving cash on a cab ride. It doesn’t get more convenient than this.
The Verdict
The Montréal Marriott Château Champlain checks all the right boxes. For about $160/night and up, guests can expect comfortable rooms, decent food, convenient location, and excellent service. If there’s availability at the hotel, I say go for it.
