This traveller bypassed law school to travel full-time, and once strutted his stuff in front of an audience in Thailand…wearing absolutely nothing. Erick Prince-Heaggans, you’re an inspiration and our Wanderer of the Week!
Name: Erick Prince- Heaggans
Age: 31
Home base: Austin, Texas is where I get mail but I’m on the road 11 months of the year. The road is my home base.
Number of countries visited: 71
What I do when I’m not travelling (aka occupation): I’m a full time Travel Journalist. Travel is my job. I was on my way to Law School after a ten year military career. Then I decided this was a far more interesting lifestyle.
My next stop: Malaysia to document indigenous Africans and learn to Scuba Dive. Then off to Africa for my first Safari in Tanzania.
My wildest and craziest adventure was: Waking up every single day. Honestly, I could never pick one. Growing up in the inner city of East Cleveland and doing THIS for a living, that’s wild and crazy to me. I’ve lost quite a few friends far too young and the fact I made it out is crazy to me.
Weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten or drank: Easily Haggis. It’s terrible. No idea how people eat that. I’m a picky eater which makes travel interesting at times. Asia is always a challenge because they LOVE interesting fish based dishes. Lot’s of the very undercooked and slimy. I’ve stopped asking what things are and just eat them. lol
I’ll never forget that time: I was stripped naked in front of 100 people at a Ping Pong show in Thailand.
Most memorable meal: I was covering a resort in Bangkok. Shang Ri-La. They have a Cantonese restaurant called Shang Palace. My god. AMAZING meal. Best I’ve ever had. When I was introduced to Peking Duck and it’s many uses.
One thing on my bucket list is: I HATE bucket lists. I think they make travel work. If you’re asking me something I want to do, road trip through Iceland which I’m doing in November.
Three things I always pack: Camera, Towel, lots of socks.
My travel advice: Just go. Stop reading guidebooks and blogs. Experience the world on your own terms and find your own adventure. If you always follow in someone else’s footsteps then you’ll miss out on creating your own.
Awesome interview, but then I’d expect nothing less from Prince Erick! How can you not like Haggis though? What’s wrong with you man! Haha!
